Question:
Dear June,
I need advice on how to get a telecommuting job. I live in a very rural area and telecommuting work is not available locally. As the head of my household, I support myself and my two children and must have work. I tried opening my own secretarial business, but it went nowhere. Companies around here aren't willing to have work done offsite. Do you know of any companies that hire outside workers? Can you offer any other suggestions?
Winnie T., Coffeyville, Kansas
Answer:
Dear Winnie
I wish I could simply tell you the name of a company to contact. Unfortunately, companies are still reluctant to hire distance teleworkers full-time. To find a job that may allow you to telecommute, assess your skills and look for work to matches your expertise. Once you're hired, learn the ropes, build a trust level, and then suggest occasional work at home. You may even have to relocate or commute a fair distance for a while. However, if you have the appropriate skills, you can find a telecommutable job. Remember, the company may not allow full-time telecommuting or may require that you spend anywhere from three months to a year in onsite training before you can work from home.
Perhaps you could use your secretarial skills to become a virtual executive assistant. A virtual assistant works for several clients and performs administrative duties at a distance. Take a look at Assistu.com or Support4you.com for more information about this type of work.
Best of luck! June Langhoff
