Question:

Dear Angela,

What do you think of classified ad submission software? I found one that looks pretty good and I don't want to have to spend all my time typing my ads and submitting them by hand.

Name withheld on request

Answer:

Classified ad submission software are programs that let you type in your ad once, and then it automatically submits it to hundreds of classified ad websites on the Internet with a simple click of a button. The big selling point is that these programs save you time and a lot of tedious, repetitive work.

Many of these programs are excellent and deliver exactly what they promise: automatic submission to classifieds sites.

What they *can't* deliver is RESULTS.

Although the only way to know what works is to experiment, chances are you'll be disappointed with the results from placing classified ads. Most people visit classified sites to *post* an ad, not to read them.

Sadly, I do speak from personal experience. :-) I once blew $100 on classified submission software (money I could ill afford to lose!). After consistently submitting my ads for a couple of months, I had to reluctantly face facts: it just wasn't working. I got a pathetically tiny trickle of traffic and didn't make a penny. Later on I placed these same ads in a few ezines. Much better response and even a few sales, so I know it wasn't the ad that was bad!

In my opinion, there are many better ways of investing your money. For example, press releases, search engines, major indexes, targeted newsletter advertising, and pay-per-click search engines. There are even some very effective free ways of promoting your business. These include writing articles, ad swaps, and targeted and selective link exchanges.
